Slowing Down

Have you ever been scrolling through Instagram or Facebook and seeing photos that just wow you but you know the person who took them doesn’t have any major photography skills other than snapping on their iPhone? You’re not alone because that’s me every day lately…

It’s easy to have social media envy these days with all the different platforms in which people can share their travels and love life. I always wonder, how do they get these shots? They must have a fancy camera, lots of time on their hands, an expensive editing system. But 9 out of 10 times it turns out it’s a phone with a little editing from a FREE app. But the largest question I always have is how did they get there, find that place, have the time?

Driving home from work the other morning there was a big cloud of smoke hovering over a cornfield with a gorgeously orange sun just peeking over the field. I slowed down and was seconds from turning onto the dirt road to stop and jump out to grab that one special photo but something in me told me “Keep going. You just worked an overnight shift, you’re tired. You don’t have time for that”. Thing is, I had all the time I needed to do it but my little shoulder devil told me to skip it. Skip a moment of peace, skip a great photo, skip a great chance at taking in the morning light.

We stop ourselves from so many things, so many GREAT things. Whether it’s a photograph, a love interest, an adventure, all because we heard a little voice that said, “You don’t have _______…”. But what would happen if all of us just let go? Forget that silly voice in our heads and did what we wanted. I know next time despite how tired I am on my drive home I’m going to pull my car over and take that picture or go on that adventure to find the waterfall, are you? What have you stopped going after all because of that little voice? Would you go after it again now knowing that you can control that voice and shut it out? Everything is worth trying.

No estás sola porque eso es conmigo todos los días últimamente …

Es fácil tener la envidia de los medios sociales en estos días con todas las diferentes plataformas en las que las personas pueden compartir sus viajes y amar la vida. Siempre me pregunto, ¿cómo obtienen estas fotografías? Deben tener una cámara de lujo, mucho tiempo libre o un costoso sistema de edición. Pero 9 de cada 10 veces resulta que es un teléfono con un poco de edición de una aplicación gratuita. Pero la pregunta más grande que siempre tengo es cómo llegaron allí, encontrar ese lugar, tener el tiempo?

Camino a casa después de una jornada de trabajo muy larga hace unos días había una gran nube de humo flotando sobre un campo de maíz con un sol magníficamente naranja asomándose por encima del campo. Desacelere y fueron segundos de girar en el camino de tierra para detenerme y saltar a tomar una foto especial, pero algo en mí me dijo “Sigue adelante. Trabajaste un turno de noche, estás cansada. No tienes tiempo para eso “. La cosa es que tenía todo el tiempo que necesitaba para hacerlo, pero mi diablillo en mi hombro me dijo que lo ignorara. Ignorar un momento de paz, ignorar una gran foto, omitir una gran oportunidad de tomar la luz de la mañana.

Nos paramos e ignoramos tantas cosas, tantas cosas GRANDES. Ya se trate de una fotografía, un interés amoroso, una aventura, todo porque hemos oído una pequeña voz que decía: “No tienes _______ …”. Pero, ¿qué pasaría si todos nos dejáramos ir? Olvidar esa voz tonta en nuestras cabezas y hacer lo que queríamos. Sé que la próxima vez a pesar de lo cansada que esté en mi camino a casa voy a parar mi coche y tomar esa foto o ir en esa aventura para encontrar la  cascada soñada, ¿verdad? ¿Qué has dejado de ir por esa pequeña voz? ¿Lo volverías a hacer ahora sabiendo que puedes controlar esa voz y cerrarla? Todo vale la pena intentarlo.
